Flandrien

The nickname “Flandrien” was first used to describe the Flemish track cyclists who competed at 6-day races in the USA in the early decades of the twentieth century. The term was later adopted for the gutsy riders from Flanders who dominated the Spring Classics.

From the late 1970s the first “International Flandrien” from countries such as Australia, Ireland, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the USA came to live, train and race in Flanders. One of the very first was the Australian Allan Peiper, and his life and career is celebrated through images and artworks at the Hotel, alongside other Flemish and international cycling legends.

Today the term Flandrien is not so much about a nationality but a mentality of grit, determination and perseverance.  By battling the elements and riding the fabled cobbles and climbs of the region, you too can call yourself Flandrien!

Andras and Krisztina are the husband-and-wife team managing the Flandrien Hotel. After years in the corporate world, Andras traded suits and boardrooms for bike routes and cobblestones. A lifelong cycling enthusiast, he’s as passionate about the open road as he is about welcoming guests from all over the world. Krisztina is the other half of the duo, bringing her love for hospitality and catering to every detail of the hotel experience. Together, they make sure guests feel at home—whether that means sharing local tips, serving up a hearty post-ride meal, or simply creating a space where people can relax after a day in the saddle.

Flandrien Scholarship

The Flandrien Scholarship Program was established in 2021 with the purpose of helping young female and male athletes to live and race in Belgium.

The Flandrien Scholarship Program exists to address a deep imbalance in professional cycling. Exceptional talent can be found in every region of the world, yet riders from Asia, Africa, and other emerging cycling nations remain underrepresented at the professional level. This gap is not about ability or ambition, it’s about access, visibility, and opportunity.

Scholarship holders live at the Flandrien Hotel and receive fully subsidised accommodation, use of  a vehicle and access to all hotel services. Stays are typically for up to three months.
